
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American singer and actress who toured for more than 40 years. London was a torch-singing singer known for her soft, melodic vocals and languid contralto voice she recorded over thirty albums of standards and jazz between 1955 and 1969. Her performance of "Cry me a river" the track she introduced on her debut album, was accepted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as a actress for her portrayal in Emergency The Adventures of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began as an actress when she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career started with film in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in numerous westerns. She also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) and with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) along together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s she signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. The final album of her studio was released in 1969. She continued her success in the role of the female main character of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) The show was joined by her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband was the producer of the show.
